"La conviction que la vraie puissance créatrice ne peut prospérer que dans la liberté et non dans le silence sépulcral des opinions prescrites, que sans individualité intellectuelle la société et l'Etat ne peuvent finalement que dépérir, que l'homme a droit à une protection contre le pouvoir arbitraire et les abus de pouvoir, que l'écrasement de toutes les divergences d'opinion et de toute forme individuelle d'esprit conduit finalement à un ennui dans lequel la vie intellectuelle de la nation est étouffée, dans lequel manquent de la joie du rieur, le moindre signe d'humour, et le piment de la vie, et dans lequel rien ne s'épanouit à part le sérieux bestial du fanatique – Cette conviction et rien d’autre constitue l'individualisme tant décrié et bien mal compris des libéraux. La plupart antilibéraux la prennent pour une expression de matérialisme béat."
